Sometime early in the nine years of piano lessons that I took as a kid I discovered that I could pick out melodies by ear and put chords to them. Then eventually the improvisational playing-by-ear part of me pretty much won out over the classical part. Anyone who has heard much of my playing at Amazing Grace has figured that out.
I also enjoy writing instrumental arrangements for solos or smaller ensembles, several of which have been played during our services. I very occasionally (because two of our guys live far away) play in a little group formed back in high school consisting of keyboard, sax, bass, and drums – we call ourselves “The Four to Go”. We played at Amazing Grace one Friday evening in October, 2017 for a fundraiser.
I have two children and two grandchildren. I seem to be totally retired from a forty-one-year career in software. I am an avid hiker when I am in shape.
